In Los Angeles 2029, Blade Runner Aahna “Ash” Ashina is haunted by a twelve year old failure. Yotun, a Nexus 6 replicant, is mentioned by name by an alleged replicant Ash is sent to capture quietly on the California coast’s sea wall. Though she isn’t the easiest person to miss, especially amongst a group of construction workers, the suspected replicant immediately flees. With the mysterious statement “Yotun redeems,” he intentionally jumps to his death. There are so many mysteries getting set up in Blade Runner 2029 that it should be very interesting to watch them unravel as this series continues.

With issue #2, Ash can’t help that her famous Blade Runner “Itch” is back. Though she unhappily remembers Yotun, he should be long gone by now. After all, as a Nexus 6 replicant he would have had the very limited lifespan of four years. The two had their brutal encounter way back in 2017. If he is still alive, how would this even be possible? The clues are all around, but it’s up to Ash to piece them together. Issue #2 sees Ash follow her trail of hunches into dangerous territory. What else could be expected from our favorite Blade Runner?

Writer Mike Johnson does a great job of creating small pockets of new worlds in Los Angeles. His ability to do so with such nonchalance, as if they have always existed and we should expect to see them, is effortless. From the sea wall to a grand mansion to a hidden club, Johnson makes the story flow from one setting to another with ease, creating a mystery within the structures of Los Angeles itself.

Andres Guinaldo and Marc Lesko’s talents bring these places to life. Even the fine details within the panels feel like valuable clues as we assume they hold more meaning than they actually do just to try to stay one foot ahead of Ash.

Blade Runner 2029 is proving to be the best of the Blade Runner comic arcs to date. Here’s hoping Mike Johnson does it justice by raising the stakes and providing a worthwhile finale.
