Extra servings of Rockwell homages in the Thanksgiving edition of Retro Cover Of The Week

The POP Retro Cover Of The Week continues its celebration and examination of comic cover excellence from the 1960s through the 2000s, this week featuring an extended timeframe edition of covers through the decades that have celebrated Thanksgiving, specifically by homaging a very famous painting.

“America’s Artist” Norman Rockwell created an instantly iconic image in his painting “Freedom From Want”, the third in his Four Freedoms series completed in the early 1940s. It’s become known as "The Thanksgiving Picture", the definitive representation of an American Thanksgiving. As usual, Rockwell's mind-blowing photorealistic style perfectly captures every person's unique features and expression, the expert rim lighting, and all of the various textures in the room and on the table.

One detail about this image has always fascinated me: the man in the lower right breaks the fourth wall and looks directly at the viewer. See how many homages of this masterpiece include this fun detail.
