The amazing cover to "Morbius The Living Vampire #1" by Ryan Brown
Marvel is reviving Morbius, The Living Vampire ahead of the upcoming movie version starring Jared Leto. The sometimes hero, sometimes villain has been in print on and off since his early Seventies first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #101, originally created as a foe for our friendly neighborhood wallcrawler.
The first appearance of Morbius
Who is Morbius? Michael Morbius is a scientist/biochemist who became inflicted with vampire-like powers and thirst after a failed self-experiment intended to cure his rare blood disorder. Each of his revivals over the decades revolved around him wandering around homelessly, an outcast monster trying to find a cure for his affliction. He’s a ghostly-white, bloodsucking version of the Bruce Banner story.
The initial issue of this new series seems to indicate that it will follow the same theme, with Morbius using an abandoned house as a research lab to find a cure. The story introduces Morbius as a hero, facing off against D-list villain The Melter with the most dynamic and terrifying issue #1 reveal I can recall.
Now THAT'S how you make an entrance!
Why Morbius originally decided to manufacture a blue and red "insulated suit" for his self-experiment that looked so vampirish (with a popped high collar and batwings under his armpits) I will never understand, but it has always been a great-looking design. Artist Marcelo Ferreira adds a nice touch by shredding those batwings, and also does an amazing job visually capturing both the vampiric horror and persistent nobility and torment in Morbius.
But just when you think the story is going to just rehash previous Morbius storytelling patterns, writer Vita Ayala throws a couple of wicked curveballs. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
