Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to "POP: Picks of the Week". Each week we will be spotlighting books that we think are worth picking up. This week has some new and exciting series launching and some killer B covers lined up from DC Comics.
There are many great B covers from DC Comics this week (including Ben Oliver's Batman Beyond #34 B and David Finch's beautiful Wonder Woman #69 B) but Joshua Middleton's amazing Batgirl #34 cover is for sure the prettiest. Another great B cover, if you are a BVS fan, is the Mark Brooks cover for Detective Comics #1002 which depicts Batman in the movie's Mech Batsuit. Batman's first encounter with the Arkham Knight in #1002 will shake him to his core.
From the Eisner Award winning creator Michael Avon Oeming and IDW Publishing comes a new chapter for Dick Tracy in Dick Tracy Forever. Another interesting new series coming out from IDW this week is Ghost Tree from writer Bobby Curnow and artist Simon Gane. A touching story about love, loss, and how the past never truly stays dead.
Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen launch their all-new sequel series to Descender (2015) this week with the launch of Ascender. Ascender takes place 10 years after the last issue of Descender. With the same creative team on board for this new series we are in for another great fantasy story. Be sure to check out our upcoming review of Ascender.
Also, this weeks issue of Spawn #296 will start the new story arch, "The Life and Death of Al Simmons." The road to Spawn's record-setting 300th issue begins here. Jim Lee is to return to Image Comics to draw Spawn #300.
Absolute Comic Group has their second printing of White Widow #1 coming out. This issue will come with 8 extra pages of new content. Scout
Comics is releasing Electric Black created by Joseph Schmalke and Rich Woodall. The Electric Black is a cursed antique shop, appearing in any time or space, soliciting customers it hungers to corrupt or devour.
Source Point Press with creators Andy Schmidt and Daniel Maine, are releasing a new series where the superhuman are the upper class society, while the non-superhuman are left to live in their shadow.
Punk Mambo #1 is the first of a 5 issue mini-series from the very talented writer Cullen Bunn and illustrator Adam Gorham. Punk Mambo is a hard-living voodoo priestess who grew up in London, then relocated to the Bayou. Now, she's a mystical mercenary for hire. Expect our Punk Mambo #1 review to be released tomorrow as well!
POP: top picks of the week are:
1) Ghost Tree - IDW Publishing -Sold out at Midtown, the artwork and story really intrigue me to pursue this issue.
2) Punk Mambo - Valiant Entertainment - With Cullen Bunn writing and illustrations from Adam Gorham this should be a great series to read.
3) Ascender - Image Comics - This book is one to watch, with Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen teaming up again to bring you the sequel to the movie-optioned series Descender. I am sure Ascender will not disappoint.
