Preview: Silver Surfer Black

Norrin Radd. The Sentinel of the Spaceways. The Herald of Galactus. The Silver Surfer has gone by many titles… and he has been an iconic character in Marvel comics for over fifty years. As my personal favorite character of all time, the Surfer has had a massive effect on me throughout the years. Not only was the Surfer’s origin story interesting, almost all of his celestial encounters have molded and shaped my mind into a larger universal acceptance and understanding of all possible religions, philosophies, and outlooks on life. That being said, his character gave me a intellectual perspective on the universe as a whole, and I enjoy his internal conflicts on how and when to interfere within a given situation. He’s a different type of “superhero,” yet he appeals to a wide range of fans.

The Silver Surfer's internal conflict makes him a different type of hero.

So, as you can imagine, when I heard about the great young gun Donny Cates, picking up his golden pen and applying it to my silver hero, I was more than over the moon excited. Mr. Cates has delivered so regularly on all the characters he has worked on for Marvel over the past few years, one can almost ride his work all the way to the bank. He is the creator of the popular new character Cosmic Ghost Rider, which shot through the stratosphere last year in Thanos #13. A character that spawned his own mini-series that was marvelously well-crafted. Now that character is apart of the ragtag group in the new Guardians of the Galaxy series, again written by Mr. Cates which has being fantastic as well. I’ve always been attracted to the cosmic storylines, and Mr. Cates has yet to disappoint on his set-ups, story arcs, or endings.

Mr. Cates has also had his hand into crafting Venom into an absolutely enticing series. Venom started out as almost a horror/thriller, yet Mr. Cates has injected all new life into the series. Mr. Cates dove deep into the symbiote lore and canon and used it to inject the series with some incredible moments, even giving the character new powers and abilities that flow with the storyline effortlessly. Donny Cates has turned all three of these series into must-reads and must-owns for any comic book fan.

Now, with Donny Cates at the helm, hopefully this new Silver Surfer series can get the attention it finally deserves. With Tradd Moore doing the artwork for this series… I’m hoping his unique style of illustration can repair the damaged memories of the most recent Surfer series that I felt was more like child-like/cartoonish than comic book/graphic novel. Hopefully, with these two titans of the industry on board, I’ve finally allowed myself to experience the slimmest of excitement that this Silver Surfer will exceed my lowered expectations.

Even though it’s only a five book series, Silver Surfer Black should deliver a small morsel of satiation for those of us that are needlessly starved of the Sentinel of the Spaceways. This series will explode into our universe, as it directly evolves out of the storyline from recent Guardians of the Galaxy series written by Mr. Cates. I for one, will be happy when this book finally hits shelves this summer on June 12th. I have a feeling it will be galactic-ally EPIC!
