Sandman/Orpheus Special #1, 1991, Vertigo/DC Comics, Cover by Dave McKean.
The POP Retro Cover Of The Week continues its examination and celebration of iconic comic covers from the 1970s through the 2000s, this week returning to the Nineties, a decade when DC’s Vertigo Comics reached its creative height, with critically-acclaimed titles like Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.
Artist Dave McKean used mixed media, combining sculpture, collage, painting, and photography to craft a moody, atmospheric run of covers that were sometimes dreamlike, sometimes nightmarish, but always creative and different and just damned beautiful works of art.
The Nineties was a decade of gimmick covers of every type, including glow-in-the-dark, like this issue. When viewed in daylight, the two figures appear to have white designs or tattoos on their clothes and bodies with random white calligraphy below them, but when viewed in the dark, the white designs glow in the dark and reveal a face with the white handdrawn caption: IN DREAMS I WALK WITH YOU.
With all of the great McKean Sandman covers to choose from, I have no doubt that others will be chosen as the POP Retro Cover Of The Week!
Next week: A cover from the 2000s!
