Chilling Adventures of Sabrina began as a thought in Roberto Aguirre-Sacassa’s brilliant mind. In 2014, Agurre-Sacassa came up with the idea to turn the comic book adventures of Sabrina Spellman, the happy go-lucky, yet chaotic teen witch, into a more real-world version, one just living in a darker realm where witches and other magical beings truly do exist. A world where friendship, joy and love can make a home. A world where depression, heartache and hate can forever change lives. The comic book series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina became a tv series by the same name when Netflix agreed to produce, with Aguirre-Sacassa on board as showrunner and sometimes writer/director. Halloween 2018 was made even more special with the premiere of the Part One of CAOS.
“Chapter One: October Country” introduced us to a 15-year old Sabrina Spellman, out with her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle and best friends Susie and Roz. Sabrina and Harvey, unable to keep their hands off of each other, profess their love as Harvey gives Sabrina her birthday present, a locket, while Nine Inch Nails’ “A Warm Place” crescendos over them in the darkness of the Spellman mortuary. The end of the episode isn’t as kind. Turning to a magical fruit, she takes a bite, hoping to be gifted a vision that will help make a choice to follow through with her Dark Baptism or not. What follows is a nightmarish scene of hanged witches, bloody hands, and Satan himself breaking out from within lunging towards Sabrina.
“Chapter Thirty-Six: At the Mountains of Madness” takes place one year later. So much has happened in this one year, in the last thirty-five chapters. Sixteen year old Sabrina signed her name in the Book of the Beast, became Satan’s Herald, trapped Satan in an Acheron, defeated a group of ancient pagans, and caused a time paradox in allowing two versions of herself to coexist.
Now, Sabrina and her coven face off against the last of the Eldritch Terrors, the Void. The series’ final episode starts off with the same characters the very first one did, just in different situations. Now, it's Roz and Harvey who can’t keep their hands off of each other. Theo, formerly Susie, is with Robin, while Nick and Sabrina have rekindled their relationship. All are enjoying a night together watching scary movies. Nick and Sabrina head back to her house only to replicate the moment Harvey gifted Sabrina her early present last year, with Nick gifting Sabrina a large locket with both of their photos inside. Even the same music plays, and Sabrina is wearing her classic red coat. How sweet, but all goes downhill from here.
Sabrina Morningstar bursts through the mirror with the Endless, having just barely escaped the clutches of the Void. Morningstar gives Spellman the dire alert of what is to come. Now, it is up to Sabrina Spellman to put an end to the final Eldritch Terror once and for all. This will not be easy. Many twists and turns take place in this episode and as usual, the end is a great shock to us all. There is no doubt this was the end Aguirre-Sacassa intended, but it was only part of an end, for now, until next time. Part 4 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina had completed filming prior to Netflix’s announcement that it would not be renewing the series, meaning, CAOS was canceled. This news was very sad to hear for many fans as well as the cast, crew, and show creator. Aguirre-Sacassa had planned a Witch War for the 5th and final Part to his CAOS series. The arc for the entire series itself was to be 5 acts or Parts. With the announcement of the cancellation, Aguirre-Sacassa went on to reveal that this finale will ultimately have to be told in comic form. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the comic book series, will reveal what happens to Sabrina and her coven after the end of Part 4.
CAOS isn’t a perfect series. There are many questions that remain unanswered, unfinished plotlines, and stories that didn’t turn out to make much sense. Despite these imperfections, CAOS is unique, genuinely entertaining, definitely shocking, and just an overall rollercoaster ride. I have had belly laughs, cried more than I would like to admit, and sat silently in the dark with my mouth agape at the culmination of many a suspenseful episode. Whether in eager anticipation or out of sheer frustration, I grabbed the remote and clicked to start the next episode again and again. I don’t know how many times I have watched the series in its entirety, especially with the assignment of writing these reviews. All of these characters, I feel like I truly know them and now I miss them, and that’s what’s saddest of all. You only get this kind of feeling at the end of a show that has truly connected with you in one way or another. Those are the best shows and for that reason I love Chilling Adventures of Sabrina very much. I know you do too.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is now available to watch in its entirety on Netflix.
