The POP Cover Of The Week is a nightmarish scene of "The Low, Low Woods #5"

The Low, Low Woods #5, DC Black Label, Cover by Sam Wolfe Connelly.

This week’s POP Cover Of The Week features a creepy cover from yet another new Joe Hill horror series title under his Hill House Comics for DC Black Label, their successor-to-Vertigo imprint for mature tales.

Not sure what it’s about, but it’s creative and disturbing: as you view the cover’s title logo (which seems to be leering back at you), you see the Low, Low Woods in the background with a creek running through them. Keep scanning down and the woods now appear to be the antlers of a no-doubt supernatural deer-like creature with human hands clawing at its face.

The illustration is beautifully designed, monochromatically colored in an off-putting palette of sickening greenish yellows, and stylized enough to seem dreamlike, a likely nightmare for one of the story’s characters. If only a violator advertising a "Sea Dogs" backup story didn’t intrude on the simplicity of this POP Cover Of The Week.

The Low, Low Woods #5 from DC Black Label is on sale Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
