Batgirl #45, DC Comics, Cover by Cam Smith and Giuseppe Camuncoli.
This week’s POP Cover Of The Week is an homage to one of comic books’ biggest and earliest legends, Will Eisner, who did more to develop the design possibilities of sequential storytelling than any other artist in the Golden Age.
Specifically, cover artists Cam Smith and Giuseppe Camuncoli have homed in on a particular stylistic technique of Eisner’s, where he would transform a city scene’s buildings or architecture into three-dimensional lettering to spell THE SPIRIT.
On the cover of Batgirl #45, the artists have done a very admirable job channeling Eisner, arranging the downtown skyscrapers to spell GOTHAM, while other words and punctuation are formed by whisps of smoke or fiery sunset cloud formations.
My only complaint is that there isn’t enough space or color contrast to act as a buffer or transition between the cloud formations and the comic title logo. It creates a visual “crash”, and makes the elements compete with each other for attention at the top of the cover.
Otherwise, this deserving POP Cover Of The Week is a fine tribute to Will Eisner and The Spirit!
Batgirl #45 from DC Comics is available March 25, 2020.
