Finger Guns #1, Vault Comics, Cover by Jen Hickman.
This week’s POP Cover Of The Week is a wraparound cover that is both lighthearted and dark at the same time.
Pointing finger guns is humorous most of the time, especially when you hold a finger gun up to the side of your head, pull the trigger, and make a funny dying face. Holding a finger gun under your chin is a more blatant and morbid mock-suicide gesture.
But don’t hold that against Jen Hickman, the cover artist of Vault Comics’ Finger Guns #1…she’s going for black humor here. “Two troubled teenagers discover they can manipulate emotions by firing Finger Guns.” It seems one of the troubled teens is trying her unusual power out on herself, mock-blowing her brains out, spewing a headful of candy, hearts, rainbows, kitties, teddy bears, etc. The issue description goes on to promise plenty of teen angst and chaos to balance out all the cuteness.
The cover trade dress (publisher's logo, issue number, headlines, creative credits, etc.) is very minimal and lets the illustration and the retro cool, visually descriptive title logo shine.
It’s an interesting premise and an imaginative wraparound illustration for this colorful, dark humored POP Cover Of The Week.
Finger Guns #1 from Vault Comics is available February 26, 2020.
