After last week’s comic-relief outer space episode, it’s back to earth this week and the next chapter in “Who the heck is Sarge and why does he look like Coulson?”
The episode opens with what Deke (Fitz and Simmons’ future grandson) has been up since he came back from the future with the rest of the team. He’s been using his knowledge of S.H.I.E.L.D. tech and future tech to become filthy rich and famous in many different fields. It made me wonder why S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn’t kept up with him and are unaware of what he’s been doing.
S.H.I.E.L.D. has determined Sarge & crew have been travelling from world to world, searching for something…but what? They also know from a new mutilated body they have left behind, that they are tracking and experimenting on people….and that Deke is next on their list. Turns out S.H.I.E.L.D. has been keeping an eye on Deke all along.
S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives in time to stop Sarge & crew from getting to Deke, but can’t stop Sarge from capturing May and escaping… again.
Meanwhile, back at the S.H.I.E.L.D. lab, the mutilated body has a little surprise inside, that leads them on a not-so-merry chase, and to a tragic ending.
What Sarge and crew are looking for is being teased out way too slowly for my taste. I know they have to make the plot last all season, but it feels like the story advances much too little each episode. However, each week never fails to be an enjoyable watch, for drama, action, and humor.
• a subplot very familiar to fans of the Alien movies
• an epic showdown between Agent May and Sarge’s sick puppy girl-soldier
• Deke’s high-maintenance uber-diva of a girlfriend, and her hilarious social network review of the day’s events
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays on ABC.
