TV REVIEW: "Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." find "Fear and Loathing on the Planet of Kitson”

Despite its title, this week’s episode is extremely playful and humorous, some much-needed comic relief after all the heavy drama and personal loss of the past season.

Enoch gets a lesson in bluffing.

The crew of the S.H.I.E.L.D. spaceship Zephyr, led by Agent Daisy Johnson (Quake), is homing in on Fitz’s location, which according to space-buzz is now the Planet of Kitson, “a nasty place, absent of any basic scrap of decency.”

Fitz and his chronicom companion Enoch are trapped on Kitson, still ducking bounty hunters, unable to leave until they can afford to buy passage on a ship. So what do you do on a planet full of bars and casinos? You use your walking computer pal to cheat at gambling, that’s what! The casino felt very much like the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars, with lots of dangerous scoundrels, interesting aliens and languages.

Daisy and crew arrive on Kitson, low on fuel and out of rations. They grab the first thing they can find to eat, and the alien food doesn’t agree with them. They spend the rest of the episode hilariously dealing with the aftereffects, and a cybernetic bounty hunter.

The lighting design on Planet Kitson is very Star Trek The Original Series, with colored gels throwing massive doses of saturated colors everywhere, and the music of Bear McCreary adding to the alien atmosphere, with its techno-meets-Stranger Things feel.

• a scene-stealing, eggheaded alien ship inspector

• a lesson in bluffing

• Hogwarts shout-outs

• a cool matter transporter effect

• a bar fight (of course!)
